Brother Lafayette (Gilbert du Motier) financed his trip to the American Colonies and volunteered to join without compensation. Brother George Washington took him under his wing and by the end of the war Brother Lafayette was invaluable to the effort and had risen to the rank of Major General, having a major role at the Battle of Yorktown. He was a wealthy French Noble who was immeasurably valuable to the Continental Army.
He went on to fight for the independence of France. However, when the revolution started to be led by radicals, he left the country. He was a life long champion of Liberty.
Marquis de Lafayette returned to the United States in 1824 and for the next year, he traveled extensively visiting civic, military and masonic leaders throughout the country. He was widely celebrated throughout the country and many streets and towns were named in his honor as a result of this trip. Lafayette at the time was the last surviving Major General of the American Revolution. We welcome and appreciate the participation of The American Friends of Lafayette' in these efforts.
